Change of Mind

Hind bintu ‘Utbah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) is the wife of Abu Sufyaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and the mother of Mu‘aawiyah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu).

Once she addressed Nabi (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and told him, “Prior to becoming a Muslim, I did not desire disgrace for any household more than for your household. Now that I have become a Muslim, I do not desire honour for any household more than for your household.” (Tabaqaat Ibnu Sa’d vol. 10, pg. 225)

Lesson: We learn from this statement of Hind (radhiyallahu ‘anha), as to how a person’s mind and heart can change completely. Thus one must be very selective as to what one studies, reads, or listens to. At times one may read something very innocently, thinking it to be harmless, whereas it poisons the mind and instils such doubts in one’s mind that no amount of explanation may then be able to remove them. We are living presently in an era where the human mind has become the battle field in which all wars are fought. The darkness of evil and disbelief are constantly trying to oppose the light of Islam. We therefore must remain under the guidance of our ‘Ulama and pious elders.
